Kazakhstan is ranked 35th out of 190 countries in the World Bank’s Ease of Doing Business index, and ranked first for protecting minority investors. Why is now the best time to invest in Kazakhstan? What is the country doing to attract investment? What is the role of the Kazakh National Samruk-Kazyna Fund – one of the 30 leading sovereign wealth funds in the world, with assets of around USD 70 billion? The comprehensive privatization plan for 2016–2020, approved by the Government of Kazakhstan, includes 876 companies, of which 215 are assets of the Samruk-Kazyna Fund. How robust is the Fund’s portfolio of companies available for sale? How can foreign investors participate in the privatization of major national assets operating in the energy, petrochemicals, mining, transportation, and logistics sectors?

Born on March 1, 1956, in Perm, to a family of oil industry workers.
1978: graduated from the Perm Polytechnic Institute with a degree in Mining Engineering.
As a student, Mr Trutnev interned with Polaznaneft and Komineft oil companies as an assistant drill-operator and then drill-operator of oil and gas production equipment.
1978: engineer and junior research associate at PermNIPIneft, a design institute developing oil and gas production equipment.
1981-1988: worked at Perm city and regional Young Communist League (YCL) committees and the regional sports committee.
1988: founded and headed the Kontakt physical fitness and recreation association.
1990: CEO of EKS LIMITED Co.
1996: CEO of shareholding company E.K.S. International comprising EKS Group enterprises.
1994: deputy of the Perm regional legislature and Chairman of its Economic Policy and Taxation Committee.
December 1996: elected Perm Mayor.
December 9, 1996: sworn in as Perm Mayor.
December 2000: elected Governor of the Perm Region.
March 9, 2004: appointed Natural Resources Minister.
State awards: Order of Merit (1988) and the Russian Government's Honorary Certificate (2006).
August 31, 2013: Appointed Deputy Prime Minister and Presidential Plenipotentiary Envoy to the Far Eastern Federal District.
Married, with five children.
Holds a 3rd Dan in the Kyokushin karate style and enjoys a variety of sports.

Baljeet Kaur Grewal

Baljeet Kaur Grewal is Managing Director / Strategy and Portfolio Investments at Samruk Kazyna. In her capacity, she provides strategic oversight to the Fund’s portfolio of investments and oversees corporate and investment strategy development, while identifying growth and portfolio diversification opportunities, priorities of major initiatives and strategic KPI development. Before this, she was Advisor and Finance Specialist / Public Management, Financial Sector and Trade Division at the Asian Development Bank, where she advised on national economic policy and national funds in missions to West Asia. Prior to this Baljeet was the Managing Director & Vice Chairman at the investment research arm of Kuwait Finance House.
Baljeet has deep experiences in strategy, investment advisory, and national economic strategies in emerging markets. She works closely with the ECB, IMF, World Bank and various governing bodies on regulatory and policy development. She is award winning and the recipient of numerous awards for excellence in Investment & Research in the Middle East, and is a key advocate of women in finance.
She was also formerly Head, Investment Banking Research at Maybank Group, Malaysia, and prior to that held senior positions at ABN AMRO Bank and Deutsche Bank. Baljeet holds an Executive MBA (Cambridge University) and has a (1st Class Hon) degree in International Economics from the University of Hertfordshire.
