ADMIRALTY

Designed by architect A. Zakharov, the Admiralty is one of St. Petersburg's oldest buildings. Its 72,5-meter-tall steeple is one of the city's highest points. The gift ship-shaped wind-vane that crowns the steeple is internationally known as a symbol of St. Petersburg. The Admiralty symbolizes the greatness of Russia as a naval power. Located in front of the Admiralty, the Aleksandrovsky Garden was founded in the times of Alexander II and named in his honor.

 PALACE SQUARE

Dvortsovaya (Palace) Square is one of St. Petersburg's most magnificent architectural complexes. It is bounded by the Winter Palace (architect B. Rastrelli), and by semicircle formed by the General Staff and Ministry buildings (architect C. Rossi). These constructions are divided from each other by the Triumphal Arch topped by the Chariot of the Victory, a monument to the Napoleonic War. Another monument to the 1812 war, the Alexander Column (architect A. Montferrand), is located in the center of the square.

 KAZAN CATHEDRAL

The Kazan Cathedral is dedicated to the icon Out Lady if Kazan. Designed by architect A. Voronikhin, it is one of St. Petersburg's major and Russia's largest cathedrals. Its main facade overlooks Nevsky Prospect. The cathedral accommodates the grave of renowned army general M. Kutuzov.

 FIELD OF MARS

The Field of Mars is a symbol of eternal memory to the fallen in wars, a witness of the Russian Army's solemn events, and one of St. Petersburg's most beautiful squares. Its architectural neighbors include the Mikhailovsky Castle, the Summer Gardens, the cathedral Our Savior on the Blood, the Troitsky (St. Trinity) Bridge, and a monument to prominent army leader A. Suvorov.

 BRONZE HORSEMAN

This monument to Peter the Great (architect E. Falconet) is located on Senate Square. Facing to the Neva, the monument is surrounded by the buildings of Admiralty, Synod and Senate. The Bronze Horseman was the first monument to have ever been constructed erected in Russia. Its establishment was initiated by Catherine the Great.

 NEVSKY PROSPECT

St. Petersburg's main street, Nevsky Prospect was repeatedly celebrated in literature and arts. The 4260-meter-long Nevsky Prospect stretches from the Admiralty to St. Alexander Nevsky's Laura. The history of the prospect dates back to the very first years of St. Petersburg.

 STRELKA (VASILIEVSKY ISLAND SPIT)

The architectural complex on Vasilievsky Island Spit is one of St. Petersburg's most beautiful spots. The two 32-meter-tall Rostral Columns on the Neva banks (architect Thomas de Thomon) look like huge lighthouses. The white colonnaded Stock Exchange with its sculptures Neptune and Two Rivers and The Navigation with Mercury and Two Rivers comprises the compositional center of the complex.

  ST. NICHLAS (NIKOLSKY) CATHEDRAL

Located on Kryukov Canal that links Fontanka to Griboedov Canal and Moika, St. Nicholas Cathedral (architect S. Chevakinsky) is a splendid building designed in the Russian Baroque style. It was constructed in a square that had originally been built as a naval parade ground.
