The EAEU and ASEAN are integration associations with great potential for trade and economic cooperation and similar intentions. The mutual interest of the EAEU and ASEAN Member States in developing cooperation is growing because the single markets of these associations are attractive in terms of both investment opportunities and the import/export of a wide range of goods, from technologies to products of light industry. Russia has assumed the presidency of the EAEU this year and is the driving force behind efforts to develop regional economic integration. Russia has been a full ASEAN Dialogue Partner since 1996. Cooperation between Russia and ASEAN now incorporates a range of working mechanisms designed to consolidate and expand interaction in various areas, including the economy. In May 2016, at a summit marking the twentieth anniversary of the dialogue partnership between Russia and ASEAN, it was proposed that a joint investigation be carried out into the prospects for creating a comprehensive free trade zone between the EAEU and ASEAN. The Memorandum of Understanding between the regulating bodies of the EAEU and ASEAN is in the works, it will also provide a platform for dialogue between both the official and business circles.
What opportunities and advantages does the EAEU offer for developing business and attracting foreign partners and investment? How can ASEAN countries benefit from this? Which are the most promising industries for expanding trade? What are the problems and challenges on the path to developing trade and interaction among the EAEU and ASEAN business communities?
