Sightseeing tours of the building and temporary exhibitions of the Russian Geographical Society
The building of the Society’s Headquarters in St. Petersburg turned 115 years old in 2023. Currently, it houses the Scientific Archive, the Cartographic fund and the largest Scientific Geographic Library in Europe. Unique manuscripts, ancient maps, editions from the personal libraries of famous travelers and members of the Russian Geographical Society are kept here: those of Petr Semenov-Tyan-Shansky, Yuly Shokalsky, Vladimir Obruchev and others. Part of the personal library of the first chairman of the Society, Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolaevich is also stored at the Headquarters.
Exclusively for SPIEF guests, the Russian Geographical Society has prepared the exhibition of unique maps “Crimea “The Pearl in the Crown of the Russian Empire”. History on the Map” and the exhibition “Nikolay Przhevalsky: scientific heritage and modern research. Dedicated to the 185th anniversary of the explorer”.
