Comfortable Housing Today for Those Creating the Future: A Focus on People
During the rapid industrialization of the Russian Empire and later the Soviet Union, new cities were built according to a single principle: industry. According to this concept, the main enterprise, the factory, was at the centre of the city, while all residential areas developed around it. Such cities are commonly known as monocities. Industrialization then halted, and the construction of monocities ceased, seemingly relegating the idea to history. However, regions, in collaboration with large businesses, have begun to revive monocities. Often, this designation for a city is no longer seen as a “diagnosis” but as a healthy function. Large corporations, which serve as the primary employers in these cities, have become socially responsible and have taken on the responsibility not only of providing jobs but also of ensuring comfortable housing and leisure spaces. We will discuss:
The new look of monocities with high technological potential;
Investments by city-forming enterprises in cities;
The renaissance of Arctic cities.
