Recent directions in scientific development have raised questions about its future. It is both actively engaging and developing established disciplines, and eroding the boundaries between disciplines through implementing common methods of research and design. This approach to research holds the promise of greater and more revolutionary discoveries, impacting potentially every aspect of our work and private lives, and increasingly attracting public interest. What does the near future hold for science? What form will the science take and what will the world’s scientific map look like? Which opportunities for invention and discovery will progress the furthest and what is behind the rapid pace of development in scientific knowledge in recent times?

Maxim Safonov is an international affairs expert in economics, and a prominent specialist in the banking services area. He has worked for a long time on the practical problems of developing banking and non-banking financial organizations, located in Russia and abroad. He has several decades of publications on the issues of national economic security, the regulation of financial systems, and anti-crisis management using financial organizations. Zhores Alferov

Nobel Prize in Physics Laureate; Vice President, Russian Academy of Sciences

Born 15 March 1930 in Vitebsk (Belarus). Education 1952: graduated from the School of Electronics at Ulyanov (Lenin) Electrotechnical Institute in Leningrad. 1979: Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (from 1991: the Russian Academy of Sciences). Professional experience 1953–2003: Ioffe Physico-Technical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences; 1987–2003: Director of Ioffe Physico-Technical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences; 1990–1991: Vice-President of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Chairman of the Praesidium of the Leningrad Scientific Centre, Since 1991: Vice-President of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Chairman of the St Petersburg Scientific Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Since 2009: Rector of St Petersburg Academic University: scientific and educational centre of nanotechnologies of the Russian Academy of Sciences (2002–2009: St Petersburg Physico-Technical scientific and educational centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences). 1989–1992: People’s Deputy of the USSR. Since 1995: Deputy of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation. Zhores Alferov is the author of more than 500 research papers, including three monographs, and more than 50 inventions. He has set up his own scientific school and trained more than 40 CScs and 10 DScs, as well as seven corresponding members of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Zhores Alferov is Doctor Emeritus at more than 60 universities round the world, as well as honorary member of many Russian and foreign academies. Christopher Pissarides

Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences Laureate; Professor of Economics, London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE)

Sir Christopher Pissarides is the Regius Professor of Economics at the London School of Economics (the first and only Regius Professor of Economics in the UK) and the Professor of European Studies at the University of Cyprus. He also holds the position of Chairman of the Council of National Economy of the Republic of Cyprus on a voluntary basis. He was educated at the University of Essex and the London School of Economics (LSE), and he spent the bulk of his career at the LSE. Sir Christopher specialises in the economics of labour markets, monetary and fiscal policy, economic growth and structural change. He was awarded the 2010 Nobel Prize in Economics, jointly with Dale Mortensen of Northwestern University and Peter Diamond of MIT, for his work on markets with frictions. The emphasis of his work has been the labour market and the theory and policy related to unemployment. Prior to that, in 2005, he became the first European economist to win the IZA Prize in Labor Economics, sharing it again with his collaborator Dale Mortensen. He is an elected Fellow of the British Academy, the Academy of Athens, the Academia Europaea and several other learned societies, and he is a Lifetime Honorary Member of the American Economic Association.In 2011 he served as the President of the European Economic Association. Between 2000 and 2007 he was the external member of the Monetary Policy Committee of the Central Bank of Cyprus, which brought the euro to Cyprus.

Leonid Gokhberg

Professor Gokhberg’s area of expertise is statistics and indicators on science, technology and innovation (STI) as well as foresight and policy studies in this area. Professor Gokhberg has coordinated dozens of national and international projects, and served as a consultant of the OECD, Eurostat, UNESCO, and other international and national agencies. He is also a member of the Global Innovation Index (GII) Advisory Board, the OECD Foresight Network, and OECD and Eurostat working groups and task forces on indicators and STI policies, and steering committees of various prestigious international and national initiatives. Professor Gokhberg is Editor-in-Chief of the Scopus-indexed journal “Foresight and STI Governance”, editor of the Springer academic book series “Science, Technology, and Innovation Studies”, and participates on the editorial boards of several other influential journals. He has authored over 400 publications in peer-reviewed journals, monographs, and university textbooks. He holds PhD and Dr. of Sc. degrees in Economics.
