The city is becoming the centre of economic growth in the modern world, but gaps between different cities are only increasing. Not all are succeeding in realizing their ambitions. Successful cities in many developed and emerging countries are demonstrating high rates of growth, even in spite of the financial crisis and stagnating national economies, and are putting themselves on the global competitiveness map. New ‘champions of growth’, like Dalian in China, Antwerp in Europe, and Curitiba in Brazil, are challenging the global megacities. The wave of the new industrial revolution is opening up new opportunities for the development of a new generation of professional services, transforming urban infrastructure, and returning modern production to cities. Fast-growing cities are making use of the opportunities provided by these developments to attract and retain talent, and gain a competitive advantage. The agendas of city leaders are changing under these new conditions, and competent administrators are becoming an important factor in cities’ success in the battle for competitiveness. Growing demand for development resources is forcing cities to seek out new models of cooperation with business, regional administrations, and national governments. What is the secret of fast-growing cities’ economic success? Can cities become the centres of a new industrialization? What is today’s agenda for city leaders?

Dr. Amit Kapoor Honorary Chairman at Institute for Competitiveness, India; is President & CEO of India Council on Competitiveness; and Editor-in-Chief of Thinkers. He is the chair for the Social Progress Imperative and Shared Value Initiative in India and sits on the board of Competitiveness initiatives in Mexico, Netherlands, Italy & France and University of Vermont’s SEMBA Advisory Board. In addition to being advisor to Thinkers50 and participant with the Global Solutions Network, he is an affiliate faculty for the Microeconomics of Competitiveness & Value Based Health Care Delivery courses of Institute of Strategy and Competitiveness, Harvard Business School and an instructor with Harvard Business Publishing in the area of Strategy, Competitiveness and Business Models. He has been inducted into the Competitiveness Hall of Fame which is administered by Institute for Strategy and Competitiveness at Harvard Business School. Amit is a Ph.D. in Industrial Economics and Business Strategy and has received the Ruth Greene Memorial Award winner for writing the best case of the year, by North American Case Research Association (NACRA). He has been invited by Kennedy School of Government & Harvard Law School, Harvard University; Pennsylvania State University, Stanford University, World Economic Forum to present his views on various issues and themes like strategy, outsourcing and economic development. Amit is the author of India City Competitiveness Report, India State Competitiveness Report, India Manufacturing Competitiveness Report, India State Sustainability Report, Livability Report et al. He is also been a columnist with IANS, Business Insider, Hindu Business Line, Mint, Financial Express, Outlook Business & Governance Now in addition to penning down academic pieces. Based on his work three awards have been constituted within the country titled State Competitiveness Awards by Mint & Hindustan Times wherein the Chief Ministers are awarded; City Competitiveness Awards by ABP wherein City Heads are awarded and Institute for Competitiveness ¬Mint Strategy Awards (now rechristened as Institute for Competitiveness Times Network Strategy Awards) wherein the corporates are awarded for their strategic acumen. Alexey Kudrin is currently Dean of School of Liberal Arts and Sciences of St. Petersburg State University. Since May 2000 till September 2011 he served as Finance Minister of Russia. His financial policies received international recognition; he was named "Finance Minister of the Year 2004" by The Banker magazine and "Finance Minister of the Year 2010" by Euromoney magazine. In years 2000-2003 and 2008-2011 Alexei Kudrin also held the post of Deputy Prime-Minister. In 2005 he was awarded the Order of Merit for the Fatherland.Before joining the government, Alexei Kudrin worked for Saint-Petersburg City government, holding positions of Deputy Mayor of St. Petersburg and Chairman of the Committee for Economy and Finances.Alexei Kudrin has academic degree of Candidate of Economic Sciences (PhD in Economics). He is professor, author of more than 30 research papers and articles on economics and finance, delivering lectures in many universities and colleges around the globe and providing his expertise to the government of Russia.

Brian Mark Evans

Professor, Glasgow School of Art; Director, Glasgow Urban Laboratory

Brian Mark Evans is Professor of Urbanism and Landscape at the Mackintosh School of Architecture, the Glasgow School of Art and director of the Glasgow Urban Laboratory. He was previously Artistic Professor of Urban Design & Planning at Chalmers School of Architecture in Gothenburg and from 1990-2015 was a partner with Gillespies LLP, the international design practice. From 2005 until 2010 he was Deputy Chair & Chair of Design Review with Architecture & Design Scotland and before that an Enabler with the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE). He is a founding Director and Academician of the Academy of Urbanism. He has led projects in some 20 countries on three continents leading to over 50 national and international awards for professional and design excellence. He has authored and edited over 200 articles, books and reports on design, landscape planning and urbanism. He has worked with projects in Moscow, St Petersburg and other Russian cities over 12 years. From 2015, he has advised the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, Geneva on Habitat III and the ‘New Urban Agenda’.
