Programme

The Energy Panel is a premier discussion platform for oil and gas leaders, government officials and acclaimed industry experts. In 2015, UN member states unanimously supported the Resolution Transforming our World: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This agenda is a plan of action for improving the well-being of people, securing the planet and prosperity. Oil and gas will remain the backbone of the global energy mix. Advancement of the oil and gas industry is a prerequisite for eradicating poverty and hunger, bridging the inequality gap and ensuring decent living standards, which is essential for sustainable development. The Energy Panel Session will provide a comprehensive insight into sustainable energy development, underlining the industry’s multinational and multicultural nature, and its geographical diversity. The discussion participants will exchange views on energy market trends, transformation of the oil and gas industry, and dynamics of the geopolitical impacts on the markets, as well as offering opinion on the cooperation and innovation potential, ensuring an effective transition to the low carbon economy.

Nobuo Tanaka

Chairman, Sasakawa Peace Foundation; Executive Director (2007–2011), International Energy Agency

Nobuo Tanaka is the Chairman of The Sasakawa Peace Foundation. As Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (IEA) from 2007 to 2011, he initiated a collective release of oil stocks in June 2011. He also played a crucial and personal role in the strengthening of ties with major non-Member energy players, including Russia, China and India.
He began his career in 1973 in the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), and has served in a number of high-ranking positions, including Director-General of the Multilateral Trade System Department. He was deeply engaged in bilateral trade issues with the US as Minister for Industry, Trade and Energy at the Embassy of Japan, Washington DC. He has also served twice as Director for Science, Technology and Industry (DSTI) of the Paris-based international organization, OECD.

Previous Experiences:
Extensive experience in the financial sector spanning over 20 years, with progressively higher posts culminated in being the GCEO of QNB from 2005 to 2013. Under his leadership, QNB Group became the largest and most profitable bank in the Middle East and North Africa, with the highest brand value and having one of the highest credit ratings. Earlier, he started his career at the Banking Control Department at Qatar Central Bank.

Ivan Glasenberg

Chief Executive Officer, Glencore

Ivan Glasenberg joined Glencore in 1984 and has been Chief Executive Officer since January 2002. He initially spent three years working in the coal/commodity department in South Africa as a marketer, before spending two years in Australia as head of the Asian coal/coke commodity division.
Between 1988 and 1989 he was based in Hong Kong as manager and head of Glencore’s Hong Kong and Beijing offices, as well as head of coal marketing in Asia, where his responsibilities included overseeing the Asian coal marketing business of Glencore and managing the administrative functions of the Hong Kong and Beijing offices.
In January 1990, he was made responsible for the worldwide coal business of Glencore for both marketing and industrial assets, and remained in this role until he became Chief Executive Officer in January 2002. Mr Glasenberg is a Chartered Accountant of South Africa and holds a Bachelor of Accountancy from the University of Witwatersrand. Mr Glasenberg also holds an MBA from the University of Southern California. He is currently a non-executive director of United Company Rusal plc.
Before joining Glencore he worked for five years at Levitt Kirson Chartered Accountants in South Africa.

Robert Dudley

Group Chief Executive, BP

Robert (Bob) Dudley is BP’s group chief executive. He was appointed an executive director of BP on 6 April 2009. Bob joined Amoco Corporation in 1979, working in a variety of engineering and commercial posts. Between 1994 and 1997, he worked on corporate development in Russia. In 1997, he became general manager for strategy for Amoco and in 1999, following the merger between BP and Amoco, was appointed to a similar role in BP. Between 1999 and 2000, he was executive assistant to the group CEO, subsequently becoming group vice president for BP’s Renewables and Alternative Energy activities. In 2002, he became group vice president responsible for BP’s upstream businesses in Russia, the Caspian Region, Angola, Algeria and Egypt. From 2003 to 2008 he was president and CEO of TNK-BP in Moscow. On his return to BP in 2009 he was appointed to the BP board and oversaw the group’s activities in the Americas and Asia. Between 23 June and 30 September 2010, he served as the president and CEO of BP’s Gulf Coast Restoration Organization in the US. He became group chief executive on 1 October 2010. Bob Dudley holds a Degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Illinois, a Masters in International Management from Thunderbird School of Global Management, and an MBA from SMU.
