Cybersport Developmental Potential to Be Discussed at SPIEF 2018

A session titled Cybersport: Global Trends in Sport and Business will be held on 24 May 2018 at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.

Emin Antonyan, Chairman of the Executive Board of the Russian e-Sports Federation will give a perspective on development of cybersports and the current challenges the industry faces. “The audience of global e-sports competitions is growing at an annual rate of 20 per cent. Young, financially capable and interested in new technologies – obviously, this audience is appealing to large brands, both Russian and international. Therefore, the industry itself is growing at a high pace. Can Russia take the lead both in terms of e-sports accomplishments and the e-sports economy? I’m sure it can. Moreover, it’s already happening now,” emphasized Emin Antonyan.

In Russia the computer sports market is already way ahead of its projected growth; the size of its audience comes close to such sports as ice hockey and basketball. In 2016, e-sport was included in the Russian Register of Sports and received the status of an official athletic discipline.

“The Cybersport session is another example of how sport effectively takes advantage of the economic forum platform to present itself. Cybersport is a new global trend that successfully takes roots in Russia. An important feature of computer sports is that it inherently has a business model. How does this industry work and what determinates such a rapid growth? What generates the investment appeal of the eSports market? Is it possible to form a commercially successful cybersport league in the Russian market? These are the discussion topics for the session participants,” said Georgy Bryusov, Deputy Director of the Roscongress Foundation.
