Epidemiological safety at SPIEF to be calculated by supercomputer modelling

Together with the Roscongress Foundation and the Centre for Hygiene and Epidemiology in the City of St. Petersburg, Rospotrebnadzor is investigating the effectiveness of various additional counter-epidemic measures using the data provided by the New Production Technologies NTI Competence Centre at St. Petersburg Peter the Great Polytechnic University (SPbPU) and the results of supercomputer modelling.

The NTI Centre of SPbPU has completed the first stage of studying the airflow at the ExpoForum Convention and Exhibition Centre, which will host the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum on 2–5 June 2021. The results of supercomputer modelling will be used by Rospotrebnadzor for further development of counter-epidemic measures.

“Ensuring safety at SPIEF is paramount for us. We are currently studying all features of the Forum venue. These efforts involve experts from the country’s top research institutes. Mathematical models will help us study ventilation systems in event halls to a highest precision and, if necessary, change the airflow. It will ensure complete safety of Forum participants and guests,” emphasized Anton Kobyakov, Advisor to the President of the Russian Federation and Executive Secretary of the SPIEF Organizing Committee.

The counter-epidemic measures at the SPIEF venue also include thermal imaging, digital herd immunity recording systems, air recirculation and decontamination devices.

“We have used supercomputers for developing unique models with over 1 billion equations. These models help us study and improve the effectiveness of the inflow and exhaust ventilation with due consideration for the event halls layout, seating arrangements, diffusor and air recirculation systems,” explained Alexey Borovkov, Head of the NTI Competence Centre at St. Petersburg Peter the Great Polytechnic University.

All accredited participants will fill in a special questionnaire developed by Rospotrebnadzor. Digitized questionnaire data will be displayed in the registration system in real time and will show the status of the herd immunity.

“Rospotrebnadzor takes developing counter-epidemic measures for the SPIEF venue seriously and accounts for state-of-the-art evaluation methods,” noted Anna Popova, Head of Rospotrebnadzor.
