Innovations at SPIEF 2021: Presenting Online Service for Simultaneous Interpreting

Participants in this year's St. Petersburg International Economic Forum will be able to use a new service – online simultaneous interpretation of Forum sessions on their smartphones.

This opportunity will be provided by Verspeak, a Russian innovation company. In 2019, this project became the winner of the Business Priority programme, an innovation platform of the Roscongress Foundation that creates opportunities for the development of the most promising domestic projects. Since then, the company has provided simultaneous interpretation at more than 2,700 events around the world. In particular, at the end of May Verspeak helped to interpret the speech made by Elon Musk, American inventor and founder of Tesla and SpaceX, at the New Knowledge marathon.

Using Verspeak, a Forum participant receives simultaneous interpretation of the event via an app on a smartphone or tablet. The interpreter provides the service remotely from anywhere on the planet with a stable internet connection.

Participants do not need to use special headsets, which the organizers traditionally offer for sessions. Participants just need the mobile app or Verspeak website.

The service is available at any Forum event, including the plenary session. In addition to English, the app allows participants to quickly (30–60 minutes before the start of any event) book the possibility of interpretation into a different language they need.

“An event of SPIEF level and scale is impossible without cutting-edge technologies. Verspeak is a service highly praised by Business Priority – our innovation platform. It helps listen to Forum sessions in different languages on regular mobile phone. It is convenient and, most importantly, safe, when it comes to fighting the spread of the coronavirus,” noted Alexander Stuglev, Chairman and CEO of the Roscongress Foundation.

“It is a great honour and responsibility for us to become the online simultaneous interpretation operator for the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, one of the biggest business events in the world,” emphasized Ruslan Musin, founder and CEO of Verspeak.

“Verspeak is one of our first projects, which looks very promising. It is only logical and right that SPIEF – the first event in the post-COVID time, which makes it a landmark one – introduces a truly innovative and global service. Interpreters from all the world help participants from all over the world that got together in St. Petersburg,” added Marianna Skragan, Director of Business Priority.
