Iran plans to send delegation to St. Petersburg International Economic Forum

A meeting has taken place in Moscow between Anton Kobyakov, Advisor to the President of the Russian Federation, and Mehdi Sanai, Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the Russian Federation. The focus of the meeting was Iran’s participation in multilateral international events scheduled to be held in Russia in 2017.

Kobyakov emphasized that Russian–Iranian relations are undergoing intensive development in a wide range of areas – politics, trade, finance, transport, cultural and humanitarian issues, and tourism. In order to support the pace of dialogue and increase the impact of cooperation between the two countries, it is essential to focus efforts on further reinforcing Russian–Iranian business relations, he noted. Kobyakov also stressed the great importance Russia attaches to cooperation with its Iranian partners in preparing for and holding a joint event at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum on June 1–3, 2017.

“A dynamic political dialogue facilitates the development of trade and economic cooperation between our two countries”, noted Ambassador Sanai. “Trade between Russia and Iran is growing; it rose by 80% in 2016. It is essential that we boost direct links between Russian and Iranian business leaders. Events such as the Russian–Iranian business forum in Tehran, organized by the Roscongress Foundation as part of the Intergovernmental Commission in December 2016, and the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum play an important role in the development of this dialogue.”

As a result of the meeting, the two sides agreed to hold a roundtable on the issues of developing business dialogue between Russia and Iran, with the participation of representatives from government and business circles, as well as the expert community, as part of the SPIEF 2017 business programme.

Ambassador Sanai confirmed Iran’s willingness to assemble a distinguished delegation for SPIEF. In addition, he expressed Iran’s interest in participating in events at the Eastern Economic Forum (to be held on September 6–7, 2017 in Vladivostok).

Kobyakov and Sanai agreed to hold further discussions on the signing of a cooperation agreement between the Roscongress Foundation and Iran’s Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines, and Agriculture on the margins of a meeting between the leaders of Russia and Iran at the end of March 2017.
