Paraguay to give presentation on its economic potential at SPIEF

A sizeable delegation from Paraguay will attend the 20th St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) in June and give a presentation on the country’s development, announced Valentina Matviyenko, Chair of the Federation Council, on Tuesday at a meeting with Mario Abdo Benitez, President of Paraguay's Chamber of Senators, the upper house of the National Congress.

"It has been announced that a large delegation from Paraguay will attend the 20th St. Petersburg International Economic Forum this year, headed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs," said Matviyenko. She added that there are plans for a presentation on Paraguay to be included in the Forum programme.

"Participating in this major international event will allow our Paraguayan colleagues to establish promising business contacts with a view to expanding trade and economic partnership between the two countries," the representative of the Federation Council said. Matviyenko added that the participation of the Paraguayan delegation in the Forum would allow for further contacts to be made between entrepreneurs. She also said that the Forum would have a dedicated programme for Latin American countries, enabling them to present not just to a Russian business audience but also to the Forum's international participants.

Matviyenko emphasized that Russia greatly appreciated Paraguay's refusal to take part in the sanctions against Russia, despite the pressure to do so. “This will provide good opportunities for Russia and Paraguay to build on their economic cooperation,” the representative of the Federation Council said. "Paraguay remains one of our key economic partners in the region," she said.

Matviyenko also announced that the two countries' foreign ministers are set to meet at the Forum. "Without doubt, this meeting of our foreign ministry heads will give fresh impetus to Russian–Paraguayan relations as a whole," she concluded.

On his part, Benitez said that the Paraguayan embassy in Moscow is “working hard to put together the delegation which will attend the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum. This Forum will give us the opportunity to further develop and promote our relations," he said. According to the Senate head, Russia is a very important market for Paraguay. "We are among the top ten global producers of meat and grain, and we supply these products to the Russian market, which is an extremely important importer for us," he said.

The 20th St. Petersburg International Economic Forum will take place on June 16–18 at a new venue in Shushary, just outside St. Petersburg. The Forum is being organized by the Roscongress Foundation, which was founded last year. Key topics on the agenda for this year’s Forum are the new global economic reality and the search for new sources of growth.
