Russia and Germany step up cooperation on the digital economy

The 36th meeting of the Russian–German working group on strategic cooperation in the field of finance and the economy has taken place in Berlin. The meeting was led by Deputy Minister of Economic Development of the Russian Federation Alexey Gruzdev and State Secretary at the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy Matthias Machnig.

The main topic under discussion was trade and economic cooperation between Russia and Germany, specifically the processes involved in production localization and technology transfer. These issues are among the priorities for the business communities in both countries.

During the plenary session, Russian experts laid out a whole series of measures which are being introduced in Russia to improve the investment climate. These include moves to enhance the mechanisms in place for concluding special investment contracts with overseas investors and innovative forms of government support for industry.

Participants stressed the need to continue developing collaboration in the field of energy efficiency and renewable energy. Specific projects in this field are carried out under the auspices of the relevant subgroup of this working group.

In order to promote the Russian suppliers active on the German market, the parties will continue to provide support for a joint project with the SME Corporation to integrate Russian small and medium-sized businesses into the global supply chains of major German companies.

On the basis of these discussions, Alexey Gruzdev and Matthias Machnig agreed to step up cooperation on the digital economy. Priority projects in this field will be identified by the parties in the near future.

The Deputy Minister of Economic Development also invited participants in the Russian–German strategic working group to take part in SPIEF 2018.

The St. Petersburg International Economic Forum 2018 will take place in St. Petersburg on May 24–26.
