Russia to host the Global Manufacturing and Industrialisation Summit 2019

In 2019, Russia will host Global Manufacturing and Industrialisation Summit (GMIS2019). The announcement was made at the Saint Petersburg Economic Forum. During the plenary session, the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin outlined a strategic task to create high-performance manufacturing sector aimed at expanding the export of competitive Russian products. The president pointed out that in this regard hosting GMIS 2019 in Yekaterinburg becomes a signature event.

“I invite the audience to attend the second edition of the Global Manufacturing and Industrialisation summit which will be held in the Ural region in the city of Yekaterinburg,” said President Putin.

Earlier this day, a Memorandum of Understanding for hosting the Global Manufacturing and Industrialisation Summit (GMIS) in 2019 in the Russian Federation was signed at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum. The signatories were Denis Manturov, Minister of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation; Suhail Mohammed Faraj Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Industry of the United Arab Emirates; Hiroshi Kuniyoshi, Deputy to the Director General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO); Badr Al Olama, Head of the GMIS Organizing Committee; Evgeny Kuyvashev, Governor of Sverdlovsk Region and Alexander Stuglev, CEO of the Roscongress Foundation, Chairman of the Board and CEO of the Roscongress Foundation.

GMIS 2019 will be staged in conjunction with the 10th International Industrial Trade Fair (INNOPROM-2019) in Yekaterinburg.  The theme of the 2019 Summit in Russia – one of the world’s biggest manufacturing powerhouses – will be ‘nature-like technologies’, otherwise known as biomimetic design and biomimicry. By drawing from the natural world in order to come up with solutions to specific challenges, scientists and engineers have successfully developed some of the world’s most landmark inventions. GMIS 2019 will promote the importance of utilizing strategies and designs created by nature to bring innovative solutions and sustainable design together in a way few other fields can.

A joint initiative by the United Arab Emirates and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the Global Manufacturing and Industrialisation Summit bridges the gap between manufacturers, governments, NGOs, technologists, and investors in harnessing the Fourth Industrial Revolution’s transformation of manufacturing, to enable the regeneration of the global economy. Uniting key stakeholders – including world leaders, industry CEOs, and specialist researchers and academics – the Global Manufacturing and Industrialisation Summit  has placed manufacturing at the heart of economic transformation and government policy-making, promoting it as a tool for global cooperation and collaboration, and is committed to ensuring the sector supports the objectives of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs).

“Manufacturing has been at the epicentre of the Russian economy for generations – it has driven our economy, unlocked the potential of our people, inspired innovation and new thinking, shaped lives and the fabric of communities, and played a significant role in Russia’s global economic reach. At a time when manufacturing must adapt to the demands and the opportunities created by the Fourth Industrial Revolution, it is therefore fitting that Russia will proudly host GMIS 2019, welcoming the world to a summit which will be instrumental in defining a successful, efficient, and sustainable path for the global manufacturing sector. In turn, major steps will be taken in Russia to ensure that the country makes a significant contribution to worldwide economic and social prosperity. When it comes to manufacturing, Russia and GMIS share ideals, beliefs, values, and vision. It is not merely an industry, it is a driver of socioeconomic benefit – benefit that reaches into people’s lives and strengthens the communities they live in. GMIS is a pioneering initiative with clear objectives and a proven capacity for nurturing collaboration and bringing results. It provides a pivotal platform from which the world can find out about overarching plans for the future of manufacturing, and Russia’s commitment to this mission is exemplified by our hosting of GMIS 2019,” said Denis Manturov, Minister of Trade and Industry of the Russian Federation.

LI Yong, Director General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), GMIS Co-Chair, emphasized: “The vision of GMIS – a global forum of which UNIDO is proud of co-chairing – is centered not simply on development, but on inclusive and sustainable industrial development, where the benefits are felt by societies, communities, and individuals throughout the world.”

“Together, we are committed to focusing the 2019 edition of the Summit on international issues related to the 4IR and, by hosting this high-level gathering of expertise, knowledge, insight, and vision in Russia – a nation synonymous with manufacturing, with innovation, and with ambition – we have the ideal setting from which to discuss global themes and identify solutions that advance global prosperity and sustainability”.

“GMIS2017 has already shown what can be set in motion, and what can be achieved, when the global community comes together as one, to address the greatest challenges facing our world. The 2019 edition of the Summit in Russia will build on this, and intensify our combined efforts and our shared vision to reshape manufacturing through the power of technology and, in doing so, build a stronger and more sustainable world in which no one should be left behind.”

“Russia’s successful bid to host GMIS 2019 demonstrates the extent of the recognition among the international community of the importance of the summit’s mission and what this ground-breaking initiative can achieve. We are delighted and proud to be partnering with the Russian Federation to host GMIS 2019 in a nation that is synonymous with manufacturing, with ambition, and with vision,” commented Khaldoon Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Advisory Board for the Global Manufacturing and Industrialisation Summit.

His Excellency Suhail Mohammed Faraj Al Mazrouei, UAE Minister of Energy and Industry, highlighted the UAE’s commitment to support the realization of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the country’s growing role as a global capital for 4IR applications and its endeavour to build prosperity at a global, as well as a national, level. “In 2019 the UAE and Russia will together build on the platform of the ground-breaking 2017 summit, in order to ensure manufacturing adapts, evolves, advances, and retains its place at the vanguard of global economic prosperity. Together, we are committed to developing a roadmap for the future development of the manufacturing sector – a roadmap that mirrors the way in which international trade, and how it is conducted, is evolving. The development of this roadmap encompasses many perspectives, many viewpoints, many themes, many challenges. But its ultimate goal is one that is shared globally: a manufacturing sector that both prospers and creates prosperity; that embraces innovation and the opportunities that technological advancements offer; and that not only strengthens economies, but societies, communities, and lives. In this way, manufacturing can retain – and elevate – its position as an instrumental driver of global sustainable development.”
