Chess at SPIEF 2023: Karjakin, Radjabov and Artificial Intelligence
For the first time, the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum will host a simultaneous chess exhibition featuring artificial intelligence.
On 15 June, Sergey Karjakin, the world rapid chess and blitz chess champion, and Teimour Radjabov, the World Cup winner from Azerbaijan, will compete against 12 Forum participants assisted by the recently developed Russian Mendeleev Chess program.
The program was developed at the initiative of Sergey Karjakin and Teimour Radjabov under the auspices of Innopraktika.
"Preparation for chess tournaments is impossible without the aid of powerful chess engines. 90% of my training involves analyzing positions and evaluating the optimal next moves. What sets this Russian IT product apart from existing programs is the integration of artificial intelligence. The project aims to emphasize the advancement of innovative domestic solutions designed to enhance the game of chess and contribute to making it more popular," said Sergey Karjakin.
The creators provided a neural network with the rules of chess, and after extensive self-play, it learned how to play well. The program is named after the eminent chemist Dmitry Mendeleev, who successfully combined his scientific work with his chess studies.
According to the rules of the simultaneous exhibition, the program will give amateurs hints every other move. The match with Karjakin and Radjabov will take place in the pavilion dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Russia's Ministry of Sport at the ExpoForum.
Another chess tournament will take place as part of the SPIEF 2023 sports and entertainment programme. On 13 June, businessmen, politicians and public figures will meet over the board at the Professor Freud private club. This year, the Roscongress Cup, organized by the St. Petersburg Chess Sports Federation, will be held for the first time in two distinct categories: one for amateurs and another for participants with an international rating.
The organizer of the sports and entertainment programme is the sports platform of the Roscongress Foundation, RC Sport.
