Members of Russian-Laotian intergovernmental committee invited to SPIEF 2018

Moscow, July 11, 2017 – The thirteenth session of the Intergovernmental Russian-Laotian Commission for Trade, Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation took place under the chairmanship of Russian Minister of Communications and Mass Media Nikolai Nikiforov and Laotian Minister of Planning and Investments Keomixay Souphan, the chairman of the Laotian part of the commission. The meeting addressed the current regulatory legal framework of Russian-Laotian cooperation, trade and economic cooperation between Russia and Laos as well as Russian-Laotian humanitarian and educational exchanges. A final protocol was signed upon conclusion of the meeting.

“We highly value our friendship with Laos, our long-standing economic partner. I am confident that today’s meeting will lay the foundation for our economic agenda for the coming year as well as for the Laotian prime minister’s planned visit to the Russian Federation”, Nikiforov said. For his part, Souphan stressed that his country is satisfied with the high rate of political dialogue between Russia and Laos.

The meeting participants discussed a number of subjects involving bilateral cooperation, in particular the Laotian prime minister’s upcoming visit to Russia in autumn 2017, the progress of the Sekong-5 HPP construction project, the activities of VimpelCom on the Laotian telecommunications market, prospects for cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear energy, prospects for increasing supplies of petroleum products to Laos as well as the activities of the companies Neiland, Teploenergostroy, and GrandDepot in Laos.

Nikiforov noted that relations between Russia and Laos had strengthened significantly following meetings between the two countries’ heads of state in 2015–2016, the Russian prime minister and the Laotian president as well as the Russian and Laotian foreign ministers. He also stressed the importance of a number of documents that aim to develop cooperation between the countries.

Nikiforov gave a general description of the state of the Russian economy and drew attention to its stabilization as well as potential for trade, economic, and investment cooperation between Russia and Laos. He spoke in favour of activities that aim to develop joint work between the two countries’ business companies, specifically exhibition and fair events, business forums, and business missions. Nikiforov invited the participants of the Intergovernmental Russian-Laotian Commission for Trade, Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation to Russia’s largest economic forums – the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum and the Eastern Economic Forum.
