During their meeting in Moscow, the officials discussed the action plan for Russia’s chairmanship of the SCO in 2019–2020.

Advisor to the Russian President Anton Kobyakov and Shanghai Cooperation Organization Secretary General Vladimir Norov held a meeting in Moscow to discuss cooperation within the SCO, including preparations for Russia’s chairmanship in the organization. They also talked about the participation of SCO representatives in the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum and the Eastern Economic Forum in 2019.

“Today we are devoting special attention to comprehensive preparations for the Russian chairmanship in the SCO in 2019–2020, which begins in June, and in the BRICS association in 2020. The action plan has been approved by the Russian President. Preparations for the infrastructure of Chelyabinsk are in full swing. We are counting on support from the organization’s Secretariat in promoting the ideas of the coordinated implementation of national development strategies and multilateral integration projects within the SCO, including the use of such platforms as the SPIEF and EEF”, Kobyakov said.

Participants in a SCO-themed panel session planned for 6 June as part of the SPIEF 2019 business programme will discuss the prospects for intensifying cooperation in various areas, including projects to develop transport interconnectivity, education, and e-commerce. “The SCO’s priority has traditionally been to ensure regional security. One of the most important focuses of our activities today is to develop economic cooperation. We view the SCO Secretary General’s annual participation in the events of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum and the Eastern Economic Forum through the prism of intensifying such cooperation”, Norov said.

Norov expressed interest in signing a Memorandum of Cooperation between the SCO Secretariat and the Roscongress Foundation on business events: “Russia has established itself as one of the leading countries in organizing international business events at the highest level and has extensive experience that needs to be shared with partners. We are ready to offer the Roscongress Foundation an opportunity to present its projects for SCO member states as a non-financial development institution and a major organizer of congress and exhibition international events”, he said.
