Investing in Cities: Measuring Effectiveness

15 Jun , 15:00–16:15
The World Economy at a Global Turning Point
Pavilion F, conference hall F3

The process of urbanization is one of the most significant for global development. Governments around the world are implementing urban development programmes aimed at developing and upgrading infrastructure, enhancing the intellectual capacity of cities, expanding their functions, transforming their economies, and addressing quality-of-life issues, including housing provision. Russia is no exception and has launched large-scale federal initiatives to create a comfortable urban environment, develop infrastructure, upgrade housing stock, and enhance the innovative and educational aspects of cities. These initiatives have elicited positive responses from both the population and the business community. Similarly, ambitious urban development projects are underway in the Asia-Pacific region, the Middle East, and other global macro-regions. While cities offer opportunities for investment and innovation in economic sectors, cultural diversity, education, and healthcare access for citizens, they also pose challenges such as pollution, social segregation, and demographic crises. Balancing economic efficiency, social development and environmental sustainability is crucial. How should the focus be set? Can big cities be appealing to families with children? What are the current requirements for infrastructure development?
