The North–South International Transport Corridor: Fostering Cooperation

15 Jun , 11:00–12:15
The World Economy at a Global Turning Point
Pavilion G, conference hall G5

2022 changed many transport and logistics routes and ramped up the urgency of the creation of alternative transport corridors around the world, but especially for the countries of Eastern Europe, Central Asia, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Africa and Latin America. In today’s world, the development of the North–South international transport corridor (ITC) is becoming increasingly important. The ITC includes not only railways and waterways, but also roads. Over 2022, volumes of freight transported along roads within the ITC increased by 2.5 times. Road transport is a key component of multimodal transport: up to 80% of the total volume of goods transported via the ITC are currently delivered by road. To reduce the time and cost of transporting goods, the outdated infrastructure of checkpoints must be modernized, the roads on the approaches to these checkpoints must be rebuilt, tax, administrative and other barriers must be removed, and the work of carriers must be synchronized through modern digital platforms. In addition, the list of countries with which Russian haulage companies transport goods should be expanded, and the number of transportation routes within the ITC increased. What are the main focuses for the development of cooperation within the ITC? What barriers to the development of transportation currently exist and how can they be overcome? What are the prospects for expanding the list of countries and increasing the number of transportation routes within the North–South ITC?
