In 2020 the entire world has lived through the age of critical changes and unpredictability. The coronavirus pandemic significantly changed the economic landscape both globally and regionally by impacting international economic relations; and cooperation between Russia and Japan was no exception to this rule. In 2020, trade volume between the two countries reached USD 16.2 billion, which is 20.4% lower than in the previous year. However, during the pandemic, both Russian and Japanese companies proved that their business can adapt quickly and be resilient to the new environment. How did the COVID-19 pandemic affect economic and business cooperation between Russia and Japan and how can this impact be mastered? What is the role of the ‘Eight-Point Cooperation Plan’? Can it lead to a quantitative and qualitative transformation of economic ties between the two countries? What can become an additional stimulus for launching joint projects in new areas, in particular, in healthcare, digital technologies and green economy, as well as for developing partnership for the purpose of embracing new technologies? How can trade and investment flows be expanded and diversified? What contribution can business make to the process of slowing down climate change?

Masami Iijima

Director, Mitsui & Co Ltd

Masami Iijima joined Mitsui & Co., Ltd. in 1974, initially working as a credit controller in the Osaka Office. Early in his career he spent three months in Johannesburg under the company’s overseas trainee program, gaining hands-on experience at the forefront of the African mining industry. His subsequent roles were mainly in the promotion of mineral and metal business, including a six-year assignment in London, until his appointment as General Manager of the Metals & Energy Administrative Division in 2005 to oversee the company’s operations in the metal and energy industries around the world.
He was promoted to President & CEO in April 2009, quickly gaining recognition within the company for his championing of Mitsui’s long-held spirit of “Challenge & Innovation” as a means of creating businesses that has genuine value for societies around the world. He strongly believes that “it’s people that matter the most” for companies aiming to achieve sustainable business success. He took up the post of Chairman of the Board of Directors in April 2015.
In his free time, Masami Iijima enjoys singing kouta (Japanese traditional ballads) accompanied by a samisen (a three-string Japanese banjo). He is also a passionate lifelong fan of baseball.

Hirosi Kajiyama

Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan

Mr. Hiroshi Kajiyama was appointed Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) on October 25, 2019.
Mr. Kajiyama also assumed the ministerial roles of Minister in charge of Industrial Competitiveness, Minister for Economic Cooperation with Russia, Minister in charge of the Response to the Economic Impact caused by the Nuclear Accident, and Minister of State for the Nuclear Damage Compensation and Decommissioning Facilitation Corporation
Immediately prior to his current assignments, Mr. Kajiyama served as the Senior Director for the Committee on Economy, Trade and Industry at the House of Representatives, the Lower House of Japan’s National Diet.
Mr. Kajiyama’s previous ministerial experience includes serving two terms as the Minister of State for Regional Revitalization and Regulatory Reform, and Minister in charge of Regional Revitalization, Administrative Reform and Civil Service Reform. In 2012, he was appointed State Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.
Previously, Mr. Kajiyama held key parliamentary roles in Japan’s House of Representatives as Chairman of the Special Committee on Disasters, Committee on Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism and as the Senior Director for the Committee on Economy, Trade and Industry.
Mr. Kajiyama has served as an elected official in Japan’s House of Representatives since 2000, successfully winning re-election 6 times. He currently represents Ibaraki’s 4th district.
Prior to seeking public office, Mr. Kajiyama served as President of a company he had founded. Mr. Kajiyama started his professional career in 1979 when he joined the Power Reactor and Nuclear Fuel Development Corporation, currently known as the Japan Atomic Energy Agency.
Mr. Kajiyama is a graduate of Nihon University’s College of Law. He was born on October 18th, 1955 in Hitachiota City, Ibaraki, Japan.

Yoshihide Hayashizaki

President, Chief Executive Officer, Mirai Genomics

Yoshihide Hayashizaki obtained his MD and PhD from Osaka University Medical School in 1982 and joined RIKEN in 1992. In 1995, he started one of the first original omics program in Japan, and more than 20 years since then, he has led omics sciences. He launched FANTOM (Functional Annotation of the Mammalian Genome), a large international research consortium (involving over 500 researchers from 20 different nations), in 2000, and his group generated large-scale transcriptome data including promotome and enhancerome analysis and transcriptional networks. In 2013, he started RIKEN Preventive Medicine and Diagnosis Innovation Program (PMI) aiming to lead the transformation of medical care to a new era enhanced with omics science, bringing greater personalized medicine and a higher standard of care. In January 2021, he was appointed CEO of K.K. Mirai Genomics which was founded under the partnership between K.K. Danform (Japanese company, https://www.dnaform.jp/en/) and EIDOS Medicine (Russian company, https://eidos-medicine.com/). He is promoting the medical application of cutting-edge science and currently focusing on developing a global business of infectious disease diagnostics, including COVID-19. He was honored many awards including Medal with Purple Ribbon, Honorary Doctor of Medicine (MDhc) from Karolinska Institute, Chen Award for Distinguished Academic Achievement in Human Genetic and Genomic Research, and elected as an EMBO Associate Member.

He was born on August 30, 1967 in Cherepovets (Vologda region).
In 1992, he graduated from the Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys (Branch of Study: "Electric Drive and Automation of Industrial Installations and Technological Complexes).
In 2001, he received MBA degree at the Business School of Northumbria University (Newcastle, UK).
He came to Severstal Company (back then — Cherepovets Steel Mill) for the first time before going to the institute. After his graduation, he was appointed the Head of Young Employees Department.
In 1993, he was appointed the Commercial Director and then — the Director General of Severstal-Invest. In 1997, he became the Director for Sales of Severstal, JSC. In this position, he created a sales system of Severstal, JSC in domestic and export markets. Starting from 2001, he is the First Deputy Director General of Severstal, JSC.
In 2002, he was appointed the first Deputy Director General of Severstal-Group and the Director General of Sollers, PJSC (back then — Severstal-Auto, JSC). From 1996 till 2000, he was a Deputy of the City Council of Cherepovets city.
From March, 2003 till 2004, he served as the Chairman of the Board of the Association of Russian Automakers, the biggest public organization of the Russian car industry.
Since October, 2012 He is the Director General of UAZ, LLC.
He was awarded with the Medal for Service to the Motherland of the 2nd degree.
He has a command of English.
He is fond of racing, particularly riding a motorcycle, as well as airplanes piloting.
