Valentina Matviyenko: trade between Russia and Vietnam to hit USD 10 billion by 2020

Trade between Russia and Vietnam should reach USD 10 billion by 2020, said Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matviyenko at the opening of a roundtable on interregional cooperation between Russia and Vietnam.

Matviyenko is currently on an official visit to the Vietnamese capital from February 20–22.

“The potential for such economic cooperation between Russia and Vietnam has not been fully realized; last year, trade between our countries was a modest USD 3.8 billion. I am confident that in the future we will achieve figures appropriate to the high level of partnership between Russia and Vietnam, and, as our leaders have envisioned, by 2020 we should bring our bilateral trade up to at least USD 10 billion, and we have every chance of doing so; we have huge untapped reserves,” said Matviyenko.

Matviyenko proposed holding another meeting on Russian–Vietnamese relations on the sidelines of the Eastern Economic Forum on September 6–7 in Vladivostok.

In addition, she appointed Federation Council Deputy Speaker Ilyas Umakhanov to oversee the development of inter-regional cooperation and report annually on the results.

She also said that Yury Trutnev, Deputy Prime Minister and Presidential Plenipotentiary Envoy to the Far Eastern Federal District, would visit Vietnam in the near future. “We expect that new agreements will be reached during the visit,” she added.
