FROM REGIONAL INTEGRATION TO GLOBAL ENGAGEMENT: PROSPECTS OF FURTHER EXPANSION OF THE CIS

The key components of the CIS economic integration agenda include the creation of a free-trade zone, expansion and development of the Customs Union (CU), creation of a Common Economic Space (CES), and the gradual formulation of a new framework for potential integration of other countries in the CU and the CES. Implementation of the fundamentals of the CU and CIS will allow the potential for deeper integration of the CIS and enhanced engagement with the EU and Asia-Pacific countries. 1) What are the current trends of regional economic integration on a global scale? 2) What are the defining characteristics and points of differentiation for integration models of the European Union, the CIS, the Customs Union, the Eurasian Economic Community, APEC and ASEAN? What are the major achievements of CIS integration of the past two decades, and what further opportunities can be realized? 3) How are global risks and challenges affecting regional integration models? What lessons can be learned from the global economic crisis that are particular to the CIS?
