Digital Security in Cities of the Future

03 Jun, 18:15–19:15

One of the priority tasks of the Russian Government is to create a comfortable urban environment and comfort is clearly and inextricably linked to digital technologies in people’s minds. In 2020, the Ministry of Construction of the Russian Federation established standards for ‘smart cities’. Now, the state corporation VEB.RF and KB Strelka are working to establish standards for city master plans which contain a separate section devoted to the digitalization of city systems and services. Along with the obvious advantages that digital technologies can bring, there are several limitations and challenges, and the most pressing of these is security. This includes questions of how to protect personal data and how to counteract cyber-attacks or hacks of city systems, which could paralyse an entire city with the appropriate level of digitalization.

1. Can we trust private companies to digitalize cities?
2. Is there room for international cooperation on this?
3. Is there a balance to be struck between integrated digitalization and security?
