The international market for audio and video content is growing exponentially. According to experts, the online streaming market alone will grow by more than 9.3% over the next few years, reaching around USD 74 billion by 2024. Revenue from subscription services will surpass that from services operating on an advertising-based model, reaching USD 21.6 billion by 2021. In Russia, the online streaming market increased by 17% to RUB 7.4 billion in 2016. In the medium term, the growth of this sector will depend as much on effective Internet copyright protection as on the regulation and development of services offering online streaming. Does the increased share of subscription services in the online streaming market signal the end for the advertising-based revenue model? What is the optimum business model for the regulation and development of services which offer users convenient access to high-quality, affordable legal audiovisual content?

Key moments
Roskomnadzor is not seeking to expand its presence in the fight against piracy; instead, we support the idea of self-regulation mechanisms to work more actively, for the fight against piracy to move entirely into the self-regulation area.
Alexander Zharov
Head, Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology, and Mass Media (Roskomnadzor)
Audio and video content piracy is indeed an international problem and every jurisdiction has to respond to it in accordance with the rule of law.
Stan McCoy
President, Managing Director, Europe, the Middle East and Africa, Motion Picture Association of America
Pirates are changing their strategies all the time and we must be flexible and fast.
Trevor Albery
Vice-President, Strategy and Operations, Content Protection and Analytics (EMEA), Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc.
The music industry is rapidly developing and is the first to apply the latest mechanisms for monetization, sale and distribution of content. Mobile devices account for more than half of all sales, primarily mobile apps. The problem we need to address now is that we have to be able to block pirate mobile apps effectively.
Leonid Agronov
Head, National Federation of the Music Industry (NFMI)
Within our planning horizon, traditional linear television will remain the dominant platform among all media.
Dmitry Chernyshenko
Chief Executive Officer, Member of the Board of Directors, Gazprom-Media Holding
Piracy is not a static challenge, these pirates are great innovators and are coming up with new business models every day.
Stan McCoy
President, Managing Director, Europe, the Middle East and Africa, Motion Picture Association of America
The music industry, which at one time began fading away… has been showing growth indicative of its revival, and this is due to digital services with the subscription-based business model.
“Digital economy is a new paradigm for the development of the state, the economy and society.”
Greetings to participants, organisers, and guests of the
27th St Petersburg International Economic Forum
“For more than a quarter of a century, the Forum has provided an opportunity for politicians, experts, business leaders, academics, and media professionals from around the world to hold in-depth discussions on key economic development trends in Russia and the world. Participants in plenary sessions, roundtables and panel discussions exchange views on ways to promote international cooperation, encourage scientific and technological progress and the development of human capital, and to effectively tackle the challenges we face.
The theme of the current meeting, The Foundations of a Multipolar World – The Formation of New Areas of Growth, is highly relevant and meaningful. A growing part of the international community is in favour of building a just and democratic system of international relations based on the principles of genuine equality, consideration for each other’s legitimate interests, and respect for the cultural and civilisational diversity of nations. It is precisely these principles that underpin the activities of BRICS, which Russia is chairing this year. It is symbolic that the history of this dynamically developing association, whose members already account for more than a third of the global economy, began at the 10th St Petersburg International Economic Forum in 2006.
Our country is open to constructive dialogue and interaction with partners and is ready to work together to address the economic, social, scientific and technological challenges of our time.
I am confident that the Forum will jump-start new and promising initiatives and projects, fostering mutually beneficial cooperation between our countries and peoples.
