Director, Rаisa Gorbacheva Memorial Research Institute for Paediatric Oncology, Haematology and Transplantation
Afanasyev BV graduated in 1971 from the First Pavov State Medical Institute of Leningrad, where he then was a clinical resident (1971-1973), a hospital resident (1973-1977), a graduate student (1973-1976), head of the hematology department (1976 -1979), senior researcher (1979-1986). In the early 70's, he facilitated the creation of a laboratory, the scientific direction of which was the study of the biology of hematopoietic stem cells in patients with different hematological diseases. As a result of this activity, he, one of the first in the USSR, developed an original method of culturing human hematopoietic stem cells, which made it possible to study the biology of both malignant cells in acute and chronic leukemia, and in neutropenic states of various etiologies.
In 1977 he defended his thesis on the topic: "The method of cloning of hematopoietic stem cells, the study of the colony-stimulating capacity of bone marrow cells and blood of hematologically healthy individuals and patients with various neutropenic conditions." In 1983, the doctoral thesis on the topic: "Granulomonocytopoiesis in acute leukemia and blast crisis" was defended. The logical conclusion of this work was the publication of the monograph "Leukopenia" in 1981 (co-authors Almazov VA, Zarytsky A.Yu., Shishkov A.L.) and in 1985, the first in the USSR and one of the first in the world, now became a classical , the monograph "Human Hematopoietic Stem Cells", written together with Professor Almazov VA.
From the late 80s to the present, professional activity is devoted to the development of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, one of the most high-tech methods for treating hematological, oncological and inherited diseases in children and adults.
In 1987 he headed one of the first bone marrow transplantation departments in the USSR, where in 1991 the first allogeneic bone marrow transplantation in the USSR in a child was successfully performed. In 1992 for the first time in Russia a method of obtaining peripheral blood stem cells was introduced with subsequent transplantation. In 1994 the doctor of medical sciences Afanasyev BV was awarded the title of a professor.
Since 1997 he is the head of the bone marrow transplantation clinic of First Pavlov State Medical University of St.Petersburg. Since 2007 he is the director of the first and the largest in the North-West Russian Federation R.Gorbacheva Institute of Pediatric Oncology, Hematology and Transplantation, a part of the Pavlov University. He was also among the initiators of its construction. Under the leadership of Afanasyev BV more than 3,000 transplantations were performed (including about 1400 in children and adolescents), of which more than 1500 from an unrelated donor.
Since 1990, he has been directly involved in the development of the National Register of Unrelated Donors. He initiated the creation of the Russian database of unrelated donors with molecular HLA typing at low and high resolution.
Since 2003, he is the head of the postgraduate faculty of hematology, transfusiology and transplantology at Pavlov University, which became the first to train specialists in the field of bone marrow transplantation in Russia. More than 60 Ph.D. theses, 6 doctoral dissertations, 350 scientific papers, 6 monographs, including 2 monographs published abroad, and 1 invention were produced under his supervision.
In 1998, Afanasyev BV was awarded with honorary sign "Honored doctor in public health", in 2010 he was awarded as "Honored Doctor of the Russian Federation", in 2015 - "For Merits to National Healthcare". In 2018, on behalf of the European Association for Bone Marrow Transplantation, was awarded the International Award for Clinical Achievement for 2018 (EBMT-European Group for Blood and Marrow Transplantation).
He is the founder of a new direction in hematology, the study of clinical and theoretical principles of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, as a method of cellular therapy and related areas of immunology, molecular biology, the use of hematopoietic and mesenchymal stem cells in other fields of medicine.
Permanent Member of the European Association for Blood and Marrow Transplantation and the International Association for Cellular Therapy, is the Editor-in-Chief of the journal "Cellular Therapy and Transplantology", a member of the editorial board of specialized journals - "Oncology Issues", "Hematology / Oncology and Immunopathology in Pediatrics", "Hematology and blood transfusion "," Russian Journal of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology "," Scientific Notes "," Clinico-laboratory consultation "," Vestnik of Hematology ", member of the Expert Council under the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, he worked as a member of the Expert Council of the Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research (USA).
